Description
Medium to large, usually elongate, hinge line moderately wide, cardinal extremities rounded in juveniles, variably mucronate or rounded in adults, maximum width usually anterior to hinge line, ventral umbonal region greatly inflated, delthyrium partially or completely covered by stegidia, ribbing in sulcus highly variable, lateral slopes strongly plicate, plicae broad, rounded, simple to costate, with fasciculate costae in some species, fold normally with median groove, microornament consisting of capillae, concentrically arranged pustules, and fine, regular growth lines, ventral valve greatly thickened with secondary shell matter, ventral interior with short, diverging dental adminicula, thick umbonal callus, and deeply impressed muscle field
